As people, whether we are training to teach the Alexander Technique, already play or teach music, or another discipline, we are always touching people in multiple ways. We may connect with someone using physical touch, words, or with our being. In every form of connection, awareness is a key component. As trainees, it is critical that we develop our awareness of how we are connecting to ourselves, for this will greatly influence how we connect to our students. And in working with our students, when we teach them to work with their own awareness, we provide them with the greatest ability to make lasting change.
Students are always asking some version of the following: “When I leave your office, I feel great! But then I gradually go back to how I was before. How do I learn to find it on my own?”
The answer, of course, is awareness. But how do we explain this so that the student will understand, and how do we teach so as to emphasize awareness? What if we were to provide the student with an answer along the lines of: “When I am working with you through touch, you have a different awareness, and that lets you have a different experience. When I take my hands away, I promise to leave you with the awareness. You own that. It is more precious than the physical changes.”
In this workshop we will explore awareness. What does it mean to the student, and what does it mean to us as teachers, to work always keeping in mind our promise to leave the student with their awareness?
